AI in academic integrity by Jaclyn Healy

AI and academic integrity

For the past few weeks, I have been learning about the impact AI has on our everyday lives and it turns out we use it a lot more than you would think!

Particularly I’ve been looking at AI and Academic Integrity which is discussing the impact AI now has on our education and if it has more of a negative or positive impact on our studies.

positives

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in many beneficial ways to help us with our education such as guiding us to find information or for simple tasks such as proof reading and spell checking. AI can even be great for teachers as it can be used as a learning tool for websites that may supply academic activity’s involving chat gbt, it can also be used to grade work which frees up the teacher’s time, so they are able to focus on assisting their students with their studies.

negatives

There are so many positives that can come from AI if used in the correct way, but students have been found to be taking advantage of AI by doing things such as getting it to write out there whole essay for them or solve questions for them. This is causing an issue in the education system as students are lacking the human element in their education. AI is also not able to understand disabilities weather its mental, physical or learning this is an issue as identity is a big part of a classroom and can make a big impact on someone’s education if not acknowledged.

The cause of the overuse of AI in our classrooms is due to students often being too tired and overworked to come up with their own authentic work and AI is the easier option to get that pass mark they are after whilst avoiding the burnout. Some teachers may also rely on AI too heavily in their teaching methods and don’t in cooperate enough human activity in their teaching style, this is having a negative impact on many aspects of the student’s education. By students relying on AI as their main source of education is going to diminish a student’s social skill due to lack of human interaction and will create the student to be more lazy and less independent as they are relying on a laptop to do all the work for them.

article i will analysis

The source I am going to be analysing is an article called Academic integrity in the age of AI written by JD White, published on the 6th of November 2023. The author JD White is a chief product officer at anthology unfortunately there is no more information on the author history of work.

I choose this article because from first glance the article was really easy to navigate and was set out well, it didn’t overwhelm me with too much information as it is broken up into sections.

Knowing that the author is also a chief product officer at anthology makes me trust the source as they are qualified.

method of analysis

I will be using the CRAAP analysis to breakdown the article and to figure out if the article is reliable information/trusted. I choose to use the CRAAP method to analysis this article piece because it is has clear points and has lots of different category’s to look into making it easier to see if they article is reliable/informative information.
