Artificial intelligence and the future of humanity | The Strategist (aspistrategist.org.au)

So, after my first blog ever. I've decided to put my critical digital skills to use and delve into the world of Artificial intelligence (AI) and humanity will fare in the future. Is AI going to take over the world like many claim or is it something that humans will always be in control of?  In my research of AI, I discovered this quote (below) which really made me stop and think. Is HUMANITY at the HANDS of AI?


"The deeper issue is our capacity to live meaningful, full-filling lives in a world in which we no longer have intelligence supremacy." (Wroe, 2023)

WHAT IS AI?
This week, I wanted to learn more about AI and how it is affecting the future of humanity. Using my digital literacy skills to search for information regarding AI, what it is and how it could be affecting the future of Humanity.
 In simple terms, it is "the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings" (Copeland, 2024)   Then I found an article written by David Wroe from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, that focuses on AI and the future of humanity and discusses short term impacts and the delves into long term future impacts.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?
But first. AI got big. Quickly. And is raising many questions? What is AI doing to Humanity? Is it a positive step into the future of combining technology and humanity or will it be the undoing?

⮜⮜⮜⮜⮜ These are critical thoughts but are only immediate. What is going to happen on the long run? 
Thus far, humans have been known as the smartest entities in the universe. But with the existence of AI, is that in jeopardy? Does AI now wear that crown and is it replacing the human mind and body with a more supreme "human"? But, really, can a computer be a human? Can a computer smile, feel, love? Is our humanness being challenged? According to Wroe, "AI's creative powers and ability to simulate empathy have already reached levels we didn't anticipate just a couple of years ago." Does this leave it open to the thought that AI can develop intimate relationships? Take a look at this video from Yuval Noah Harari as he discusses concerns around the existence of AI. Among many other affects, Harari talks about how AI could possibly form deep, intimate relationships.

A CONCEPT SO INCREDIBLE IT'S HARD TO CONTEMPLATE!!
Another very real possibility is the concept of integrating the human brain with AI to avoid being left behind. The thought of this is insane, or is it? According to Wroe, "Elon Musk's Neuralink, is the best-known enterprise in this field and there's plenty of work going on." Is it a case of if you can't beat them, join them? The human mind combined with AI. Imagine the psychological impact on society.

WHAT DO WE DO?
In the long term, Roe states, "AI needs to serve the interests of humanity, not the other way round." At this point, we still have the power to control how far AI takes us, but at what point will this change? Are we going to allow an artificial machine to take away our humanity? Humanity needs to carefully navigate the AI road and govern just how much we let AI into our lives. It is our choice to remain human and keep our humanness.

IS THIS INFORMATION "REAL"?
After reading this website article, I decided to use the CRAAP method to evaluate just how trustworthy this information is. The article is from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) website and the article is titled "Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity", written by David Wroe, 2023. Considering this is the topic I wanted to learn more about, going by the title, I felt like this article would give me insight.

As I'm learning how to analyse online information, I'm assuming you might also. So here is a quick 2 min video (that's all Zoom would allow me) of me using the CRAAP method to determine whether this source is applicable to my research.

The CRAAP method helped me to realise that this article is full of opinions and may not necessarily be fact. Yes, it's current, relevant to the topic and meets the purpose. However, it doesn't give much insight into the author and then that leads me to question the accuracy. If you clicked on my video, you will have heard me say that there is not much "concrete evidence" to back up Wroe's thoughts.
