DIGITAL LITERACIES ASSESSMENT 2 (VLOG 2)
Using Critical Digital Literacy Skills to Evaluate Online Information Related to AI and the Future of Humanity
This week I’ve been putting my critical digital literacies skills to use by searching for information about AI and the future of humanity.
In this vlog I will be discussing the topic of Artificial Intelligence also known as AI, which is the science of making machines that can think like humans, it is able to process much larger sums of data than humans. Artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing in this day and age and continues to shape the future of humanity across nearly every industry. The increased use of artificial intelligence faces ethical challenges, with the main focus on security and privacy violations. Companies require large volumes of data in order to train the models that power the AI tools, in order to address this challenge, there requires cooperation among ethicists, the technical community as well as policymakers. In terms of AI on a personal level, organisations are now needing to implement encryptions as well as stronger access controls to secure the data.
Another concern with the increased use of AI is a significant job loss, with employees estimating almost one third of their tasks could be performed especially in the more skilled and creative positions.
What industries will AI impact the most? The use of AI manufacturing bots goes back to as early as the 1960s, the tools in this particular industry perform tasks such as assembly, stacking and predictive analysis sensors.
The presence of AI in healthcare has also seen an increase. Its advanced so much that it can help identify the presence of a disease more quickly and effectively, speed up research into new drugs and even be able to monitor patients.
The use of AI in education is, and will have a dramatic effect on learning. It’s able to create educational games, a range of new learning platforms, chatbots as well as a system that’s able to create more support to the individual. From a teacher’s point of view its also able to pick up on plagiarism as well as grading and feedback.
Is Artificial Intelligence a threat to humanity? It all depends on the decisions of the people who are in control of it, in order to control the looming threat of AI and its increasing presence in our society its important that cooperation among the right people is maintained and a public assurance of its ethical use. However, people are sceptical of the potential malicious use of it, with concerns for the privacy of their data as it could also be used to expose people’s personal information and spread misinformation.
Chosen article. The article I have chosen to focus on for the video evaluation is “The Future Of AI: What to expect in the next 5 years”. Author of this article is Michael Bennett and was published on 25 January 2024 on a website called TechTarget. What method was used in the evaluation? For this particular article I chose to make use of the CRAAP method. This acronym stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy and Purpose.
The currency of the article is dated 2024 so I know it contains updated information, relevance is simple as it talks about AI and the future. I have done a background check of the source of information so I know its authority, to my understanding the accuracy of the information is legit and checks out with other related sources and last but not least the purpose of writing the article is valid.
