A Day in My Digital Life

Dear reader,

My name is Amelia and I am a first year university student, hopefully specialising in Anaesthesiology one day. In this post, I will detail how I use the digital world to assist me on a daily basis. The digital world is extremely important to me, especially for studying and keeping up to date with friends and family. Every day of the week is entirely different in terms of the software and hardware I use, so this post will focus on my typical Tuesday.

To start, I thought I should give you a brief overview of my day.

Let’s start exploring my day from the very beginning: when I wake up. Every morning, I rely on the alarm function on my phone to help me wake up. I use a variety of different alarm sounds, ranging from loud and obnoxious car horns to soothing melodies, hoping one will effectively wake me up. Despite my efforts, I often find myself hitting the snooze button, which tends to disrupt my morning schedule.

In addition to my alarms, I control LEDs with an app on my phone. This allows me to adjust the colour, brightness, and schedule what time they turn on and off. I schedule my LEDs to turn on around 6:30am, creating a sunrise effect to help combat the darkness in my room.

After waking up, I check my social media for any missed messages from friends or important emails I may of received overnight. Additionally, I review the data collected by my Apple Watch using the Apple Health app from the previous day.

After getting up, I make some breakfast (and coffee, of course) and then check my Excel spreadsheet. This spreadsheet serves as a detailed weekly timetable, containing a to-do list for each subject and assignment. It also includes detailed and extensive formulas to track progress of what is needed to be done for each subject and assignment.

After checking my schedule, I enjoy some Netflix while I eat. Currently, I am hooked on ‘Doom at Your Services’ (highly recommend it for all the Kdrama lovers!).

After I finish watching Netflix, I head to my desk and start studying. I rely on various software for university, including Canvas (where all my study materials are posted), Teams (for material discussed in class), and Zoom (used for attending my classes).

While I study, I tend to put on one of my two favourite playlists on Spotify: either my Alternative music playlist or a playlist with all of my Favourite music from all different genres.

Lunch tends to sneak up on me quickly. After making myself something to eat, I often passively scroll through TikTok or Instagram, call my best friend, or watch Netflix. Occasionally, I might do some cleaning, but let’s be honest, who likes doing that?🤷‍♀️

On a Tuesday, after lunch, I have my first class of the day via Zoom, followed by another back-to-back class. I log onto Zoom using my laptop so I can take notes on my iPad using a notepad app and my Apple Pencil.

Once my class is over, I am well and truly over studying for the day, so I unwind by playing some music. I use various software tools and instruments to achieve this, as detailed in the video below.

After my classes and music, I join my family for dinner. In this time i enjoy one of the few moments in my days away from the digital world.

Later, during my shower, I bring in my speaker to play my Upbeat playlist and sing along, turning a mundane task into a fun experience.

After showering, I return to my room to either work on assignments or play video games on my PS4. I use an app called Remote Play to project the PS4 onto my laptop screen via wifi. While gaming, I use my iPad as a second screen, often multitasking by watching YouTube videos or doing quick web searches related on the game I am playing.

Around 10pm, I start to wind down and get into bed, where I play my Classical playlist on Spotify to help me fall asleep.

Although I did not mention it earlier, I constantly check my phone throughout the day and chat with my friends. I hope you enjoyed reading about a day in my digital life, and thank you for reading!
