The problem of DeepFakes
This week I have been putting my critical digital literacy skills to use by searching for information about an internet safety issue.Deepfakes
what is Deepfakes
I have been looking at deepfakes which basically is when someone makes a “synthetic media generated using artificial intelligence or AI for short, including images, videos, audio, or text.” deepfakes have taken over the internet throughout the world as many people as using them to create illusions to trick people into thinking that the AI of someone is actually them which can led to harming people.

what is the issue with Deepfakes
“The issue with this is that deepfakes have been used to create fake news, false pornographic videos, and malicious hoaxes, identity theft, extortion, sexual exploitation, reputational damage, ridicule, intimidation, and harassment. usually targeting well-known people such as politicians and celebrities.”
why is this issue so important
Deepfakes is an issue due to people sometimes being unable to figure out if it is real or not and due to how new deepfakes are to mainstream media it is easy for people to get confused and believe it is real. This is a real issue nowadays as technology plays a main part in everyone's life with many younger people having easy access to this, it can lead to exposure of deepfakes to this people which can cause many problems for them for the rest of their life.
who is affected by Deepfakes
Everyone can be affected by deepfakes but usually people with high popularity or significance are targeted more. However there have been many cases lately and early this year where high school students had been found making deepfakes of fellow students and teachers where they have swapped their head onto someone else body. Deepfakes are made by people getting images, videos, audio, or text and by using AI can then turn them into something else whilst still looking like the original in some way, for example someone might get a video of their friend speaking about football and with the help of artificial intelligence they can turn it into a video where it looks like there friend is singing happy birthday.

Why do people make them and what do they get out of it
The cause of deepfakes is to create confusion and dishonest things online like videos or images to led people towards a certain way or belief. Deepfakes are also made for a bit of fun and laughter, however sometimes that can result in further problems down the line. The effects of this deepfakes are identity theft which can lead to inappropriate or incorrect fake images and videos and then from that can led to people being less open and more closed off as they feel less freedom due to the idea someone could do it to them. Imagine you posting a photo of yourself and then you see it combined with someone else to take some fake photo of you.
Supporting article
The article I have chosen to evaluate using one of the main critical digital literacy's evaluation methods is https://www.csiro.au/en/news/all/articles/2024/february/detect-deepfakes
My evaluation to the article
This video shows me evaluating my article with the CRAAP method
Passcode: 4#V+yq9^qu
How I evaluated the article
I chose the CRAAP method to evaluate my article because out of the three I thought this one suited the best and covered the right points to get a good understanding of whether the article was reliable, up to date and covered the information correctly. After finishing the CRAAP test we can see that the article is a reliable source with many links to other resources that express the same knowledge to back up the article there is also professional opinions from doctors however it does not seem to have been updated recently but does finish by giving the audience ways in which they can stay safe from deepfakes themselves.
